ARCHIVES: What we mean when we say “Fight On!” or “Roll Tide” or “War Eagle” or…

May 8, 2008

Hello Fellow Football Fiends!

(This post originally ran on September 20, 2007)

This is gonna be a different kind of post for Gridiron Goddess. It focuses on the intangible feeling alums of certain universities get when they say “Roll Tide” or “War Eagle” or, of course “Fight On.” So read on, I hope you enjoy it and WAHOO Another weekend of football is nearly upon us. Oh, and I happen to think this picture of all the USC fans doing their Fight On thing here is a beautiful, sacred thing.

Some people have a security blanket. Some people have a teddy bear.

I have a security sweatshirt.

On Saturday morning, er, almost afternoon actually, as I crawled out of bed close to noon and grabbed my white hooded USC sweatshirt, it suddenly occurred to me just how many events in my life that particular sweatshirt has been witness to.

In February 1987 my father and I went on a road trip. It was my Senior Year of high school and we were off on the obligatory father-daughter bonding college campus trip. We loaded up the banana mobile (a yellow Oldsmobile station wagon that was the bane of my existence until I embraced it for its gigantic 8 cylinder engine) and set out for Southern California.

On our agenda: University of Southern California, California State University Long Beach and the University of San Diego, where one of my best friends was a freshman.

First up was USC, being the closest. It was also not a school I intended on attending. We got lost. We got lost in such a bad neighborhood that when we got to USC, its neighborhood seemed good. Anyone who knows about SC knows this is so far from the truth that it is laughable.

I wanted to go to Long Beach and major in Art. LBSU has a great art program. And if not there, to USD where Didi was and Jodi was going to go. USC was a VERY distant third.

Until I stepped foot on campus. Just seeing the carved rock entrance signs that say University of Southern California gave me chills. And they still do. Seeing the red brick campus and all the students and everything going on there— it was what college was supposed to be. At least to me. So I marched us to the bookstore and bought a sweatshirt. A white hooded sweatshirt with USC on it in Cardinal and Gold.

And it was this moment that I knew this was where I was going to college.

It was this sweatshirt I wore to my Long Beach State visit. It was this sweatshirt I wore to my USD visit. It was this sweatshirt I was wearing on the drive home when we got snowed in at Mountain Pass and had to backtrack to Baker to find a room for the night. And wore to bed because there was a hole in the window, the heat did not work, and the advertised cable television out front that we were so relieved about—well, every time the lobby TV changed channels, so did the one in our room. My Dad and I laughed and laughed and laughed that night.

It was this sweatshirt I wore to nearly every football game of my collegiate career. It was this sweatshirt I wore on every break home—just so that everyone knew I no longer lived there, that I’d gotten out and was going to a fabulous school.

It was this sweatshirt that was at the ready when my parents told me they were getting divorced. It was this sweatshirt that was there when nine years later, they remarried each other.

It is this sweatshirt I am wearing in my first ever picture with my newborn niece. She is now 15 and looking at USC in her future.

It was this sweatshirt I wore when I moved to San Diego. It was this sweatshirt I wore when I moved back to LA. And nearly every weekend for twenty years. It’s been to Chicago, to Las Vegas, to New York, to San Francisco, to Phoenix, to Tucson, to D.C., to Orlando, to Hawaii, to Philadelphia, to tiny Ely, NV; to Paris, to Cabo San Lucas, to St. Thomas, Antigua, Anguilla and St. Martin.

It was this sweatshirt that I wore when I went thru the not changing my clothes phase of breakups with the most serious and loved of my exboyfriends.. It was this sweatshirt that I again turned to when I made the difficult choice to leave The Philly Fan because it was healthier for me. It is this sweatshirt that until recently, I did not even realize had been such a witness to my life. And such a talisman of comfort and home and family. When I chose USC, I took the first step into my adult life. And it is fitting that this first purchase at my school would become my oldest surviving and still in use and most beloved sweatshirt.

Linus ain’t got nothin’ on me with his blanket.

FIGHT ON!

-Your Gridiron Goddess, who will replace this picture tomorrow with one of her in that aforementioned 20 year old sweatshirt. When I am not, you know, drunkity.

Sunday night is football recap night – UPDATED 10pm

August 12, 2007

I have a confession to make, fellow football fiends. As stoked as I am to have football back in our lives, I have a hard time mustering up the enthusiasm to care about the outcomes of the pre-season games too much. Are you with me on that? Cause rarely does the better team win, or if they do win, win by much more than a field goal. Rarely do we see the stars of the team play and when we do, we’re holding our breath and hoping they don’t get hurt.

So as much as I am enjoying these pre-season games for the pure football-ness of them, that je ne sais quoi quality of OMFG my team MUST WIN is missing from the viewing experience, know what I mean?

Now that said, here is my Weekend of Football Update, which I will be adding to all day long as I get to it.

New York Jets beat Vick-less Atlanta Falcons 31-16.

Tampa Bay Bucs beat New England Patriots 13 -10. Pats backup QBs saw some play. Even former USC backup QB and 7th round draft pick by the Pats Matt Cassel saw some play.

Buffalo Bills over New Orleans Saints 13-10

St. Louis Rams beat Minnesota Vikings 13-10

Miami Dolphins pull out the win against Jacksonville Jaguars 18-17. Trent Green struggled in his first start for the Dolphins and the hometown crowds was vociferous in their booing. The backup QBs stepped in and were a bit more effectual, pulling out the win for the Dolphins.

Green Bay Packers over Pittsburgh Steelers 13-9. Neither starting QB- Favre and Rothlisberger–did much to impress in tonights game which saw no scoring by the starting lineup of either offense. Backup Packers QB Aaron Rodgers did manage to look fairly impressive going 18 0f 27 for 168 yards and one touchdown.

Cleveland Browns over Kansas City Chiefs 16-12. Brady Quinn watches from sideline. Charlie Frye got the start and finished 12 of 15 for 122 yards while Quinn watched with a clipboard. Two bad plays by Frye overshadow his good passes, one of which was returned for a Chiefs TD.

Washington Redskins beat Tennessee Titans 14-6. Clinton Portis injury update and Vince Young benched. Titans management keeping Young’s offense under wraps, but some reports say it was Young staying at his home last night rather than the team hotel. Portis reportedly did not play due to knee tendonitis, but docs say he is on the right track to recovery and full playing ability.

Carolina Panthers beat New York Giants 24-21. Finally a game with a little bit of offense. I am personally happy whenever the Giants go down, but my pal Nacho Friendly and his Brethren will be happy their ‘Cats won.

My Chicago Bears begin the Cedric Benson era and beat Matt Schaub in his debut as a Houston Texan 20-19. Sexy Rexy, much as it pains me to admit, didn’t look too bad.

The Oakland Raiders beat Matt Leinart and the Arizona Cardinals 27-23. AZ still needs an O-Line.

The Seahawks beat the Chargers 24-16 and I posted my Madden post at ArmchairGM.com and a lively over 130 comment debate ensued here. No L.T. and only limited Shaun Alexander seen on the field.

are you REALLY ready for some football?

August 8, 2007

Hey hey hey football fans and fanatics and fiends. Your Gridiron Goddess is ready to nod off for the night, but I cannot shake the building inner feelings of WOO HOO (to quote Homer Simpson) about the first Pre-Season NFL games kicking off Thursday night! And my fellow SC alum Carson Palmer is going to be MY kickoff player to watch as his Bengals take on the much beleaguered and maligned and in need of a new GM more than anything else Detroit Lions. (BTW, Detroit, my GM services are available. lol)

And as you all know, defending Super Bowl Champs the Indianapolis Colts take on the Dallas Cowboys in Thursday’s other game.

The long desolate barefoot march through the Sahara desert known as the offseason is just about over. And finally, right?! It is my favorite time of year, hands down, without a doubt. Indubitably.

My beloved alma mater, Southern California, kicked off fall camp this week and heh heh the campus is less than 10 miles away, I might have to go introduce myself to the coaching staff for some live from the sidelines of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum type posting this fall. Hmmmmm. Must work on this for my fans and brethren in football love.

My buddy and cohort in football fanaticism Nacho Friendly and I plan to ring in this very special and hallowed Thursday in which our fav sport comes back to life with reverence and more than a little bit of WOO HOO! And wine. Always the wine for your Gridiron Goddess. And maybe some special Hollywood style voodoo magic spell castings for our fav teams. All y’all know I am a Bears and Chargers girl. Nacho is a Carolina boy. At least Carolina loves their Trojan players-they have 3 former USC stars in Keary Colbert, Dwayne Jarrett and Ryan Khalil.

We survived another off season! Now… let Super Bowl speculation begin! And I suppose, for doubters, BCS National Championship speculation as well. But I feel I should let you all know– USC is gonna win the title this year. But I am not at all biased.

In other, hmmm, sort of football news for Thursday’s kick off day of rejoicing that football is back in our worlds: Pacman Jones set to make his pro wrestling debut. Yeah, I so see this going well. Not. Um, Pacman, dude. Did you learn nothing from Johnnie Morton’s ill fated journey into the world of mixed martial arts? Pay particular attention, Pacman, to the way Morton, a former Trojan, got his ass handed to him all right quick like? But, hey, on the other hand, your name IS Pacman and that is a pretty freaking apropos  wrestling moniker.

We’re going camping!

July 17, 2007

People, can you believe it? It’s so damn close now, it is almost unbearable. The long dry stretch of time without football is almost over. We’ve survived it one more time. It only feels like we’re gonna die without it. When we can’t take another moment… football season is here again.

And thank God for that, eh? I mean I like baseball and all, but compared to football? YAWN.

I need to hear the crunch of pads crashing into helmets, hold my breath when the QB lets a bomb fly down field to a receiver under double coverage, I even want to feel the outrage of a bad call and the vindication when the coach throws down the challenge flag. I need me some 1st downs and 4th and inches and flea flickers.

In just seven days, training camp starts! Pittsburgh is the first full team scheduled to get their well toned butts to training camp and I can feel my excitement growing already. Even better – in FIFTY days the 2007 season opener will be played between defending Superbowl Champs the Indianapolis Colts and The New Orleans Saints.

Are your keggerators ready?

SI.com’s Peter King released his Pre-Season Power Rankings today. I want to make a point to mention that King has my San Diego Chargers at #3 and my Chicago Bears at #5. Now my good friend Nacho Friendly and his brother over at Sports Brethren are Carolina boys. And King has their Panthers ranked at #16.

Ouch.

Do I agree with the Power Rankings saying Carolina is going to be that mediocre this year? I don’t actually. They have a lot of questions to answer, that’s for sure. Hopefully their new offensive coordinator, Jeff Davidson, can solve some of QB Jake Delhomme’s issues. Carolina is a team with three former USC players in Keary Colbert, Ryan Kalil and Dwayne Jarrett, so I watch them regularly.

I would place Carolina at about 13. I believe Tennessee, Detroit and the Jets will be worse teams than the Panthers.

As feared, the Bears did not come to an agreement with Lance Briggs by yesterday’s 3pm deadline. This is problematic for a number of reasons. The Bears placed a franchise tag on Briggs back in February. His only option now really, is to take the one year $7.2 million contract offered him and hope for the big money deal next season. Briggs has threatened to sit out the first 10 games of the season, and only play the final 6 in order to get credit for being an active player for the season. He vowed never to play for the Bears again if he didn’t get the multi-year deal he was seeking. And, he didn’t.

So much of the time, the Bears defense seems like the Brian Urlacher show. Everywhere you look, there he is. One season my ex-boyfriend and I developed an intricate drinking game based on Urlacher, but I’ll get into that at a later date. Without Briggs, Urlacher can’t be Urlacher. In order for Urlacher to zip from one side of the field to the other, he needs Briggs’s strength holding down the fort, so to speak. Briggs’s athleticism is on par with Urlacher’s.

This will be an interesting situation.

Also failing to reach a multi-year deal today were the Pats and Cornerback Assante Samuel. Also a franchise player, Samuel and the Pats face the same situation and threat as the Bears and Briggs do. Samuel is coming off his best season yet.

That’s all for tonight fellow football fans!
